The Vacation Dilemma – Enjoyment Without Tanking Your Goals

We’ve all been there – the vacation we’ve been planning for weeks or months has finally arrived and we are ecstatic for some well deserved time away from the gym and counting macros. All we want to do is relax and enjoy drinks by the pool, let our bodies recover, and hit up all the local restaurants. For a moment, we pull up photos of the hotel gym and convince ourselves that we COULD workout everyday. But it’s a fleeting thought, and the more likely scenario is that we go to the other extreme. We completely go off the rails and come home feeling bloated, slightly depressed, and it takes 2-3 weeks in the gym to recover from that one week of fun. So how do we achieve balance? At Summit, we’ve got you covered with a few tips for maintaining your fitness and nutrition while still enjoying vacation.

  1. Find exercise that you can enjoy. Unless you just LOVE hotel gyms, give yourself permission to swap out those machines for something you will really enjoy. Research a local park to take a walk, go hiking and enjoy the views, or try out a new sport or fitness class that’s outside of your normal routine.
  2. Give yourself permission to “taste and waste”. Want to enjoy a cinnamon roll from the local bakery or those blueberry pancakes from a local breakfast joint? Does a frozen drink poolside sound amazing? Go for it, but also be ok with trying a few bites of something without having to consume the entire plate.
  3. Protein is your best friend. News flash – if you are sitting by the pool reading a book all day, you probably don’t need 3 meals per day. However, we don’t skimp on our protein! We rely on our Kilo collapsible shaker and Vade Nutrition travel protein packs for a convenient and easy way to get in our protein shakes on the go!
